What this site is, who is answerable for it, and what the rules are.

This is a translation. The Italian version is the controller's reference text, because the data controller is established in Italy. Read the Italian version

Simply reading this site requires no registration, no payment and no contract for the provision of a service.

1. What Undecidable Research is

Undecidable Research is the name used by an independent, informal group of people collaborating on research in AI and computer science.

No company has been incorporated and no legal person has been recognised. The name is not entered in any register; the group has no legal personality, VAT number or registered office. It carries on no commercial activity in its own name and distributes no profits.

Accordingly, and to be explicit about what the collective is not:

  • it is not an ente del Terzo settore, an associazione di promozione sociale, an organizzazione di volontariato, an impresa sociale, or any other legal form under Italian legislative decrees 117/2017 or 112/2017
  • it issues no certifications, attestations, credits or qualifications of any kind, and nothing done here carries legal or academic standing in itself
  • it takes no donations, membership fees, sponsorships or payments, and no channel exists for making any
  • it does not present itself as affiliated with, sponsored by, controlled by or endorsed by any university, company, laboratory or other third party, unless a specific affiliation is expressly stated

The person who runs the site, and the data controller, is Edoardo Bambini, a natural person, established in Italy, reachable at info@undecidable-research.com.

1.1 What does not exist

The list above says what this group is not called. This one says what does not exist, which is the part that actually matters:

  • there is no common fund, no bank account, no payment account and no other means of payment held in the name of the group or of the name
  • nobody contributes money, assets or rights, and there is nothing held in common for them to be contributed to
  • no economic activity is carried on and there are no profits: there is nothing to divide, in money or in any other form
  • nobody is paid, and nobody owes work or services to anybody else. Anyone taking part stops when they want, with no notice and no consequence
  • the group owns nothing. The domain, the hosting and this site belong to Edoardo Bambini, a natural person, who pays for them with his own money
  • nobody represents anybody else without specific authorisation. No one can take on obligations, sign agreements or receive money in anyone else’s name without being authorised: otherwise whoever signs does so for themselves
  • no status is acquired. There is no register of members, no fees are paid, no obligations are taken on and no rights are acquired against the others

1.2 What “the collective” means

“Undecidable Research” is the name used by people collaborating informally. Where this document and the others say “the collective”, they mean those people. There is no common fund, property held by the group, or payment or contract in its name. Each person acts and remains responsible for themselves unless they specifically authorise someone else.

Anyone taking part may identify “Undecidable Research” as the collaboration in which work was carried out, where the publication venue permits it. It must not be presented as an institutional affiliation, author or rights holder, and does not make anyone a representative of anyone else.

2. Using the site

The site is public and free to read. It asks for no credentials, creates no accounts and opens no sessions. It collects no data through forms, cookies or analytics; the technical logs of the infrastructure hosting it remain, and are described in the privacy policy.

All that is asked is that you do not attempt to compromise its operation or security, and do not use it for unlawful purposes.

3. Content and licences

The text written for this site is released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0): you may reproduce and adapt it, including commercially, provided you credit the source and indicate whether you made changes.

Copyright stays with whoever wrote it. Authors remain the owners of their own text and it is they who grant this licence. No rights are assigned to the group or to the name “Undecidable Research”.

An individual piece may carry its own licence, different from the general one: a work already published elsewhere, for instance, or one covered by a publisher’s terms. Where that is the case the licence is stated on that piece and prevails over this paragraph.

The source code of the site is released under the Apache License 2.0.

Third-party material referred to on the site is excluded from these licences and follows its own terms.

4. Taking part

4.1 Minimum age

Getting into the discussion space, once it opens, will take being at least 18. The requirement is declared by whoever joins; there is no verification.

This is an organisational rule of the project, not a general statutory age for reading websites or taking part in online discussions.

4.2 Where it happens

There is no dedicated community platform today: no chat server and no forum. Taking part means corresponding with the people in the group and working on what they work on. The providers used for ordinary email are described in the privacy policy; there are no additional terms for access to a community platform.

A space on Discord is planned, and it is not open yet. When it is, the platform will be Discord’s and not that of the people taking part: joining it will mean accepting Discord’s own terms and privacy notice, which nobody here is party to and over which nobody here has any power. From that point this document and the privacy policy will say what data passes through that platform.

The Code of Conduct sets out the principles that apply today in the interactions connected with this project, and the rules on access, moderation and reporting that will apply in the discussion spaces once those are open. That document says explicitly which of its parts are operative and which are not.

5. Language

These terms are written in Italian and translated into English. If they differ, the Italian version is the controller’s reference text.
