Code of Conduct
What is expected today, and what will apply in the community spaces once they open.
This is a translation. The Italian version is the controller's reference text, because the data controller is established in Italy. Read the Italian version
This document has two parts, and it is worth saying up front which of them applies right now.
The principles in sections 1 to 3 apply today, in the collaborations and public interactions connected with this project.
The rules on access to spaces, moderation and reporting are not here, because there is no community space administered by the people taking part in this project: no chat server, no forum, nothing else. A space on Discord is planned, and it is not open yet. Section 4 says what happens when it opens.
A note on how this is written. From here on the document speaks in the first person plural, because it is adapted from the Contributor Covenant and the original is written that way. That “we” means the people who choose to follow these principles; each makes only their own commitments. Nobody here makes commitments on anyone else’s behalf, as the terms of use say at 1.2.
1. Our pledge
We pledge to make taking part in this work a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of age, body size, visible or invisible disability, ethnicity, sex characteristics, gender identity and expression, level of experience, education, socio-economic status, nationality, personal appearance, religion, or sexual identity and orientation.
We pledge to act and interact in ways that contribute to an open, welcoming, diverse, inclusive and healthy environment.
2. Expected behaviour
- showing empathy and kindness toward other people
- being respectful of differing opinions, viewpoints and experiences
- giving and gracefully accepting constructive feedback
- accepting responsibility for our mistakes, apologising to those affected and learning from the experience
- focusing on what is best for the shared work and not only for ourselves
- keeping criticism of an idea separate from criticism of the person holding it, which is also how research is done
3. Behaviour that is not tolerated
- sexualised language or imagery, and sexual attention or advances of any kind
- trolling, insulting or derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks
- harassment, public or private
- publishing others’ private information, such as a physical or email address, without their explicit permission
- spam, unsolicited advertising, unsolicited recruitment
- posting unlawful content, or content that infringes the rights of others
- any other conduct which could reasonably be considered inappropriate in a professional setting
4. Community spaces
There is no discussion space administered by the people taking part in this project today: no chat server, no forum, nothing else. A space on Discord is planned, and it is not open yet.
The rules for access, moderation and reporting that will apply in that space are published here before it opens, not after. Writing them now would mean describing how something works that does not exist.
There is no reporting channel, because there is not yet a space for one to be about. The only published address is info@undecidable-research.com, for ordinary correspondence and for anything concerning the processing of personal data: it is not a channel equipped for structured reports about abuse, harassment or other people’s behaviour, and until that channel exists saying so beats letting it be assumed.
5. Attribution
This Code of Conduct is adapted from the
Contributor Covenant,
version 2.1, available at
https://www.contributor-covenant.org/version/2/1/code_of_conduct.html, and is
licensed under
Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International
(CC BY 4.0).
Against the original, the enforcement parts have not been carried over: there is no space they could be about, and they will be written when there is one. The note at the top on how the original’s “we” is to be read has been added.
